Standard Industry Facts
CDW
Crash Damage Waiver
This is maximum amount you are liable for the damage incurred to your vehicle in an accident. If the amount blocked is 600 Euro and you cause 1,200 Euro damage to the vehicle as specified by the suppliers garage then the full 600 Euro will be taken from your card.
The supplier will use this for any damage to the vehicle during your rental including scratches and anything that is not considered “wear ad tear”.
Theft
This is maximum amount your are liable for should the vehicle be stolen or damaged in an attempted crime. For example if you have a 600 Euro Theft excess and the vehicle is stolen then only the excess amount will be taken from your credit card.
Warning – In most cases where you have been negligent toward either damage to the vehicle or a theft of the vehicle the excess amounts will be removed and you will be liable for the full amount.
Credit Card Requirements
In the majority of cases a credit card with enough remaining credit to cover at least the excess amount is required to pick up the rental car. This should be in the stated driver’s name, the amount will not be taken from your credit card but will be blocked so in such a case can be debited up to the excess agreed.
Please note that with most suppliers you can reduce the amount blocked on the card by purchasing their additional excess reducing insurances. These are normally a “per day” charge and will either remove the excess completely or reduce it to an agreed amount.
